A so called block chest, rare object, most likely from the period of Henry VIII, possibly earlier (Romanesque).
The chest is a family heirloom. My family knows little about this chest. My father always used to talk about "the oldest chest in the Netherlands"
The outer dimensions; length is approx. 160 cm., the height is approx. 39 cm. and the width is approx. 49 cm.
The inner dimensions; length is approx. 114 cm., the height is approx. 27 cm. and the width is approx. 33 cm.
Oak wood, lock seems original and works but the connection between the lock plate and the chest is worn.
The chest is described in: 'Antiek in woord en beeld' by Anton van Oirschot, ISBN. 90 252 6503 0 (the illustrated and described chest is a copy of this one offered) Van Oirschot dates the chest way earlier, between 1000 and 1250.
The same type of chest was offered at Christie's London in January 2009 as lot 1 and another unearthed copy was offered at Christie's London in March 2011 as lot 33.
