-------------------
Sappho was a lyric poet from ancient Greece. She was a native of Mytilene, the capital city of the island of Lesbos. In the nineteenth century, according to the feminist classicist Page DuBois the myth became fashionable that she on her return founded a kind of aristocratic boarding school for girls. The atmosphere of intimacy between Sappho and girls in her poems gave her the reputation to prefer women love, hence the word lesbian literally "from the island of Lesbos".
