Willem Hamel was father to Jack Hamel. He taught a.o.: Hinke Gorter, Jack Hamel, and Jacoba van Heemskerck van Beest. Willem Hamel regularly exhibited in a.o. the Hague, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. His work is featured in the Drents Museum in Assen and the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem. Willem Hamel was known as the "sheep painter", and his style was similar to that of his contemporary and friend Anton Mauve and Taco Mesdag.
