This ceremonial rug is an Asmalyk; a camel harness, often woven in pairs.
They decorated the flanks of the ceremonial camel mounted by the young Turkoman bride, on the wedding day.
The Asmalyk, in its pentagonal shape, is made with great care. It is an item that carries the family's honour and savoir-faire of the bride.
To prepare her trousseau and her Asmalyks, the future bride gathered the best wool, which came mainly from the neck of lambs, and knotted her wedding cushions with great care.
This is the reason why Asmalyks are known for their quality, through the material and the prowess in asymmetric knotting as through the finesse in the patterns and respect of traditions.
After the wedding, the Asmalyck rug is naturally used for tent decoration.
The Arabatchi weavers are among the most unknown weavers from Turkestan.
It is hard to identify and date their rugs for a few reasons. Although the tribe probably lived in the Bukhara emirate, its zone of occupation is not known precisely, nor is its history, as it is the case for other small tribes from central Asia during the 19th century. Due to their rarity, rugs by this tribe are very sought after by aficionados known as "Turkmaniacs". Although the Arabatchis are an ancient tribe, only some rare antique items by them are known.
Sigmund Freud was a hobbyist of Turkmen rugs, and the Asmalyks featured prominently in his collection.
