Maximilien Luce was a prolific French Neo-impressionist artist, known for his paintings, illustrations, engravings, and graphic art, and also for his anarchist activism. Starting as an engraver, he then concentrated on painting, first as an Impressionist, then as a Pointillist, and finally returning to Impressionism.
Auxerre was a popular subject for the impressionists and the cathedral and abbey were painted from all aspects, most famously by Alfred Sisley, along with Gustav Loiseau who painted many views. This exact spot on the Quais was also used to great effect by Paul Signac and Georges Seurat (both in 1907). As was often the case, Luce forsake the reflections of the L'Yonne and brought the canal, working boat and ordinary folk into the foreground.
The colours in this painting are vibrant and the brushwork sharp. Colours are echoed throughout the painting giving a cohesive presentation. For example, lilacs in the clouds are present throughout the painting, in the roofs, the bridge and the foreground. There is a lively feel to the colours. The shining sun hitting the trees and cathedral, is brought into the foreground with the yellow on the Quais, with the artist sat in the shade.
