Mid 20th century - in good condition.
Beautiful, heavy panel in relief of a King with his followers in bronze of 5.5 kg, from the region of BENIN in Equatorial Africa. Wonderful quality and stunning in terms of details.
All figures have the very characteristic BENIN facial features, with plenty of tribal figurations. Four warriors stand beside the throne on guard with spears and shields. Very special is the canopy under which they are standing.
These kind of panels were made on the occasion of an important event, in this case probably an important ritual on the upcoming coronation of the Oba King. Currently there is no king on the throne. These panels were used in the Royal Palace to the emphasize the power of the King.
BENIN city was the religious and former royal centre of the current Yoruba people.
The panel is the of high quality and made with the cire perdue technique, thus unique in its kind. Beautifully finished off with plenty of detail. Very nice patina. Because of the primitive casting process, there are a few casting flaws and imperfections. Have a good look at the pictures.
Dimensions approximately 28 x 40 cm.
Weight: approximately 5.5 kg.
