The Bordeaux region has the largest appellation-controlled wine producing area in the world. Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur wines are made from a blend of traditional grape varieties in various proportions (usually with either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot as the dominant grape). They are generally fruity, medium-bodied wines that are best drunk fairly young. Wines laying claim to this description must be produced in the department of the Gironde, except for those from the sandy areas to the west and south. These wines are made according to strict rules, particularly regarding grapes varieties and yields. However, behind this apparent geographical uniformity, there are not only several types of wine (rosé, white and red) but also a wide variety of separate wine-producing areas (Libourne, Graves, Médoc, etc.). This classic, unchanging, consistent Bordeaux is not, in any sense, Mouton Rothchild's second wine, and cannot be compared to it. However, many wine drinker appreciate its well-rounded, supple character, and the fact that is produced with the expertise of a top château. Its success has remained undiminished and a white Mouton cadet was created in the 1970s. There is now even a rosé. Read more
