Swip Stolk / Andres Serrano - A History of Sex, Groninger Museum (signed) - 1997
This scandalous image was originally chosen to advertise a Dutch museum's exhibition of Andres Serrano's erotic photographs entitled A History of Sex. The exhibition toured the world in 1997, stopping in Groningen, Holland, from February 23rd to May 19th. Taken from one of the photographs in the exhibition, Leo's Fantasy, this image shocked Holland to its very core, so much so that "church groups protested. Conservatives lobbied a Dutch court to halt distribution of the poster [and] paint bombs were lobbed at the museum's walls" (Artforum, Summer, 1997). The protests were successful and this shocking image was replaced with a blank poster reading only, "Kom zelf maar kijken!" [Come and see for your self!] The resulting publicity drew a record-breaking 90,000 people to the museum during the course of the three-month exhibition. That this poster was withdrawn from circulation makes it quite rare.
