Four metal 40/4 industrial steel wire stackable chairs in the colour orange, designed by David Rowland in 1964. Manufactured by Howe in the year 1974.
The chair is called "40/4" because 40 chairs can be stacked up to a height of 4 feet. This chair was the first compact stackable chair, and is widely regarded as the golden standard of stackable chairs. Due to its unprecedented stacking possibilities, but also due to its seating comfort, durability, timelessness and elegance. Critics often refer to this chair for its unparalleled industrial sophistication and production method. The chair is frequently found in the top 10 of the best designer chairs from the 20th century.
Condition: Given the age of these chairs, which are over 40 years old, they are still in fairly good condition. They have signs of wear, the most significant ones were clearly photographed. Hardly any to no rust. Rust is quite common on these chairs when they reach a certain age. They have one or two small dents, not visible in the photos.
One chair is slightly bent, but that's only visible when all of the chairs are stacked. This chair moves slightly when touched. You won't notice it when you are sitting in the chair, and when all the chairs are placed next to each other, it is not visible.
All chairs have the original floor glides.
The chairs are heavy, due to the use of steel wire and metal seats; they have a combined weight of no less than 27 kg.
These materials also make them virtually indestructible and suitable to be used for many years to come.
Please see all photos to get a complete impression. Each chair was photographed separately, a pitch-black photo was placed in between the photos of the different chairs.
