Zeeuws "Paeremes" with "ziel" - horse knife
For centuries, it has been a tradition in Zeeland that boys carve their own horse knife at the age of sixteen. It is also known as a “boerenzakmes” or a “Zeeuws paeremes”. It was kept in a thick leather sheath and carried at all times. On the hilt features 2 horses eating from a rack. Under this there is a cage with a freely moving ball, the represents the “ziel” (soul). No horse knife is complete without a soul, a ball that is carved out of the same piece of wood (not added later), and sits in a cage with bars. Under this cage, the hilt is decorated with farming instruments. The whole things has been beautifully carved and designed.
Size: total length 33 cm. The blade is 18.5 cm.
