Rare Chinese drawing titled Er Du Mei: "The second blossoming of the Plum flower". The title can also be found at the top of the drawing, in the centre. The drawing is a woodblock print printed on rice paper, which was subsequently coloured. The colours are still bright and vibrant. The paper has become damaged along the edges however, due to age, but this is not disturbing to the image. mmmm The passe-partout covers the edges so that the ugly spots disappear.
Signed with Keo (?) followed by a date 19-3-(18)80? at the right bottom. I have had this drawing appraised and the probable date that it was made is indeed around this year. The drawing tells the story of an event in the Tang Dynasty (period 617–907).
The story depicts the engagement of a very young Mei Liangyu (central figure and son of a magistrate) to Chen Xing Yuan (second figure from the left). Standing next to Chen is Zou Yunying (third woman from the left). Right after this engagement the country is attacked by Northern Barbarians. In order to prevent pillaging and raids, the emperor promises that the Northern Barbarians are to be given the most beautiful girls in the country. These included both depicted ladies, Chen and Zou. When saying goodbye, Mei and Chen promise each other eternal loyalty. In the enemy's country, Chen tries to escape in all sorts of ways in order to be with Mei once again. When she does not succeed in this, she tries to take her own life and jumps off a cliff. Her fall is broken by a woman who committed suicide for the same reason. However, by jumping Chen is now free and she can finally marry her beloved Mei. The story does not tell who the woman on the right side of the drawing is (Mrs. Zou). A Chinese opera was made after this story, which was performed in Canada in the 1920s. The explanation of this story will be included, on paper.
The drawing is stuck to the very old glass, the drawing is framed in a solid oak frame, in one piece. The old frame certainly dated from the indicated period as well, but it was completely decayed. The old glass cannot be removed, as it will cause the rice paper to tear. That is why the old glass was left on when it was framed. The drawing is authentic and was checked for authenticity by a specialist in The Hague. There is a tear in the paper, at the bottom, but this is secured by the glass and the base. The size of the frame is 73 cm x 56 cm and the weight of this lot is 5.6 kg, without packaging.
Shipment is possible, by GLS in the affiliated countries in Europe, to other countries by PostNL. Naturally it the shipment will be sent very well-packaged and by registered post, traceable with Track and Trace. Due to the fragile glass pick-up in Roosendaal/Nispen (the Netherlands) is preferred.
