Old Batavia is a beautiful book, that one still reads with pleasure. That is not only because of De Haan's great literary talent, but the chosen topic enabled him to spill his irony and jokes, which is appealing.
Haan, Frederik de, colonial-historian (Leeuwarden 22-7-1863 - Haarlem 16-8-1938). De Haan attended the Stedelijk Gymnasium in his hometown. In 1884, he began to study the classical Arts in Utrecht, where he obtained his doctorate with honours on April 12, 1892 with Prof. H. van Herwerden with a dissertation with the title Annotationes ad Demosthenis quae fertur orationem Lacriteam.
Immediately after his promotion, De Haan left for the Dutch East Indies. Initially, he made his living as a home teacher. Soon he became interested in the Dutch-Indian history and was seen at the national archive almost daily. This resulted in two appointments as a daily worker in the period 1898-1901. First he worked at the archival organisation, and then he researched the system of the United East India Company (VOC) in the Preanger regencies, the 'hinterland' of Batavia. In the meantime, De Haan had published a number of historical articles and this record was sufficient to appoint him as the successor of the deceased lands registrar J.A. van der Chijs in 1905.

Also in De Haan's second major work, Oud Batavia. Memorial book published by the Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences on the occasion of the three hundredth anniversary of the city in 1919, little incense appeared. He began writing this work after the completion of Priangan, by order of the Board of the Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences. The research for this book was not based solely on records, but De Haan went out to explore the old, hot, lower regions of Batavia on his bike, drenched in sweat. Yet he found complaints about the heat nothing other than silly. The book was expanded to a considerable extent, which is why it was published in three volumes after the memorial in 1922/1923. Oud Batavia is a beautiful book, that one still reads with pleasure. That is not only because of De Haan's great literary talent, but the chosen topic enabled him to spill his irony and jokes, which is appealing. In particular, he described the manners and customs of the people that he lovingly called 'Batavianen'. Exaggerated boasting, culture barbarism and greed; De Haan exposed all of this with sardonic pleasure. Strictly historically speaking, this work probably offers a one-sided view, during which he also polemicised with contemporaries. He who consults De Haan should therefore be careful and not forget to enjoy.
