The "Flying at Flight Level Zero" alongside the scenically attractive Rhine Valley soon developed to be an example of fully integrated traffic. The swift as could be and exemplary cooperation between Lufthansa and the Federal Railroad was based upon the belief that the different modes of transport had to work together from both an economic as well as an environmental point of view. It was just as well that in the early 1980s three of these express trains of the four-part series 403 (motor carriages) or 404 (motor carriage in the centre) of the DB were virtually unemployed and sidelined. At the time in 1973 they were purchased for the sole purpose of the premium Intercity system, but with the introduction of the 2nd class Intercity system in 1979 they were kept dormant. The 200 km/h high-speed trains with drive on all axles, soon had the nickname "Donald Duck" because of their characteristic shape. Their visual likeness with aircraft was finally brought to fruition as from 27 March 1982. From Düsseldorf the trains "flew" under flight numbers LH 1001-1008 as "Airport Express" with four pairs of train from Frankfurt-Airport to Düsseldorf Main station (even from March 1983 to Düsseldorf Airport) and back under contract to Lufthansa with stopovers in Cologne-Deutz, Cologne and Bonn Central Stations. These trains first underwent an extensive renovation in the AW Bad Canstatt according to the requirements of the aviation company. At this stage they also changed their livery from the unique colours of white-red-black for the lemon yellow and light grey of Lufthansa. The goal was to limit the growth of the uneconomic air traffic on the extremely short routes Cologne/Bonn-Frankfurt and Düsseldorf-Frankfurt. This goal has been fully achieved. In 1991 for example, more than 218,000 travellers used the "Train to the Plane" between Düsseldorf and Frankfurt. If all these travellers had flown in Boeing 737 's that would have taken approx. 3000 additional flights. Despite the low running costs (compared with short air travel) and relatively high numbers of travellers the Lufthansa Airport Express stopped running on 23 May 1993. One reason was the significant corrosion damage on the engine cars 403, for which extensive and costly repairs would have been necessary. The photos are an integral part of the description of this lot. Locomotives have a one-month warranty after purchase. If found to be defective within 1 month it can be returned free of charge within the Netherlands. All packages will be sent registered and insured mail.
