Byzantine cross - hanging wall candleholder
Made of dark cast iron with brass.
Byzantine cross with possibility to burn two candles. This type of candleholders finds its origin in the former Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire).
Age: probably 2nd half of the 20th century
Decorative, functional and in good condition.
Length 59 cm
These wall sconces are often considered to be a forerunner of the standing candlesticks. At the top one can see a warrior with a scimitar and in the other hand something looking like a head. This may be the story of Perseus. The candlestick also contains two bird bodies with two heads each and a crown. (two-headed eagle).
Historically interesting, also because much is still unclear.
