‘Celtic Fairy Tales’ and ‘More Celtic Fairy Tales’: both first trade editions, published respectively in 1892 and 1894. Selected and edited by Joseph Jacobs.
This wonderfully illustrated two-volume collection of Celtic fairy tales (including stories of Scottish, Irish, Welsh and Cornish origin) was one of several collaborations between Joseph Jacobs and John Batten, whose work together resulted in some of the most outstanding children’s books of the period.
Joseph Jacobs’ achievements as a folklorist and story-teller compare with those of his contemporary Andrew Lang, editor of the famous ‘coloured’ Fairy Books. Born in Australia and an eminent historian, Jacobs (1854-1916) was an authority on folk stories and for a time edited the British journal ‘Folk-Lore’. Although his collections of fairy tales were aimed at children, he also took care to provide scholarly notes and references for the interested adult reader.
John Dickson Batten (1862-1932) studied art at the Slade School, at the same time as H.J. Ford. The two artists followed similar careers, Ford illustrating Andrew Lang’s fairy books, Batten illustrating Joseph Jacobs’ collections of English, Celtic and Indian fairy tales (1890-94), as well as a splendid two-volume edition of the ‘Arabian Nights’ (1893-95). His superb set of illustrations for Dante’s ‘Inferno’ was published posthumously in 1933.
