A silver plated, gemstone and ebony figure of an ornamented elephant - Kandy, Sri Lanka - circa 1930
An excellent dark hardwood statuette of an elephant, measuring 14cm tall, almost completely clad in silver and set with gemstones: pink and yellow sapphire, ruby, chrysoberyl and other gemstones found in the alluvial deposits in Sri Lanka. Marked SS (probably Sterling Silver but actual silver content varies in these countries).
The elephant is depicted clad in the traditional Esala Perahera (festival of the tooth) ornamentation. This historical procession is held annually to pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha at the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy. The relic is carried in a sacred stupa on the back of a heavily decorated, bejewelled elephant.
