Ben Viegers (1886-1947) - Stadspoortje
Bernardus Petrus Ben Viegers was initially strongly influenced by the Hague School as a painter.
He was born in The Hague in 1886 and died in 1947 in Nunspeet.
Ben Viegers was an self-taught artist. His early works illustrate his will power and determination to learn the tools of the trade. That he ultimately succeeded is obvious from the fact that he was admitted to the Hague art circle as a full member. Here Viegers maintained contacts with artists who later became well-known, such as Jan Toorop, Aris and Jan Knikker and Charles Dankmeijer.
After the Hague years and many wanderings later Ben Viegers settled in Nunspeet. He manifested himself in his Veluwe period as a true square artist. He painted preferably outside.
Like so many contemporaries, he regularly painted on the Veluwe.
He also lived for a long time in Nunspeet, where the landscape and the peasant population were a constant source of inspiration for him.
