Emmanuel, Ernest, Gerardus van der Ven - known to the painters as Manus van der Ven - was born on 12th November 1866 in 's-Hertogenbosch. He could boast an artistic ancestry. He presumably went to Laren for the first time around 1894 in order to work there. In the first two years he had a hard time financially. There he met the friends Jaap Dooijewaard and Frans Langeveld, two young bohemians, who tried to persuade him to come live and work in Laren.
'It is a pity that you are ruining yourself with that job', they said, 'you have to come here and paint!' Marinus liked that, but he did not dare to plainly give up the certainty of his well-paid job, because he did not have any money. When Jan Hamdorff finally promised to help him, he made the decision and settled in Laren in 1903. The three went to work together in a house on the Zijtak 24.
He now thought he had found his way. He was a painter and was able to paint - at least for the time being free of money worries. Encouragingly, the art dealer Van Herpen helped him by buying many of his works. Van der Ven mainly painted flowers and has become one of our best flower painters. At the International exhibition of the living masters in Amsterdam in 1912, his work was awarded a silver medal.
He had the most success with his still lifes, also serious in atmosphere, but often with beautiful colours. In general, he was a serious and skilled painter. In the younger painting generation he had a lot of authority because of his ability and he was good friends with many of the older artists.
On the occasion of his seventieth birthday, they organized an honorary exhibition for him, which showed that he was appreciated by many. A sympathetic trait of Manus was that he had requested to hang some paintings of his father as a tribute to him who had been his first teacher. In addition to many painters, prominent figures were present at the opening, including aldermen and counsellors and the mayors of Laren and Blaricum. Mayor Van Nispen van Sevenaer van Laren opened the exhibition and Co Breman and Jaap Dooijewaard spoke about his merits as a person and as an artist.
Manus van der Ven lived reasonably happy with and for his art, but he struggled with money his entire life. With his modest art he remained one of the smaller masters among Laren painters and he had a lot of support from Jan Hamdorff.
Van der Ven died after a long illness on 27th August 1944 in Laren.
This beautiful painting has recently been professionally cleaned and can therefore been hung immediately.
