IRENE WELLENS 1923 – 2004.
She was a student of her uncle Charles Wellens and was trained at the Brussels Academy from 1940. She was taught by Alfred Bastien. Painted figurative Kempische landscapes, interiors, farms, flowers, portraits, fishing ports etc.
Also made watercolours and pastels. Had a permanent exhibition and studio in the Beguinage in Diest (since 73). Lived in Brussels since her marriage (1946).
Exhibitions were organised in Beringen-Mijn Casino (1954), several times in Jette, Zolder, Hasselt, Leuven and Knokke. In 1988, painted a life-size portrait of Saint John Berchmans.
In 1989 for the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of her uncle Charles Wellens, the Generale Bank in Lummen organised an Irene Wellens exhibition. In March 2009, five years after her death, there was a tribute exhibition organised in Galerie Esschius, Begijnhofpoort in Diest.
